The murder of Xolani Xaka - Zwide Township, Gqeberha, Eastern Cape, South Africa - August 18, 2024

Author: A.B.

On 18 August 2024, Xolani Xaka, a 32-year-old gay man from Zwide, Gqeberha in the Nelson Mandela Bay area, was fatally stabbed outside the home he shared with his uncle by three unidentified attackers. According to family representative Zukiswa Veto, Xolani heard noises at the gate of the house he shared with his uncle around 18:00 and went to investigate—reportedly after being called to the gate. He was confronted by three men who attacked and savagely stabbed him multiple times before fleeing the scene. It is believed that Xolani died at the scene.

During the attack, Xolani cried out to his uncle, who rushed out of the house to assist. When the men threatened to stab the older man as well, he ran back inside and hid until they fled.

Xolani Xaka was a respected member of the LGBTQ+ community in Gqeberha who sought connection and support amid ongoing challenges. According to his cousin and family representative, Zukiswa Veto, he was open about his sexual identity with both his family and community. Xolani had an interest in music, particularly Beyoncé, and studied Marketing and Management. His life and tragic death highlight the risks and difficulties that many LGBTQ+ people continue to face in South Africa.

The motive for the murder remains uncertain, but it does not seem to have been a robbery. While the exact reason for the attack is still unknown, it is important to note that LGBTIQ+ individuals often face a heightened risk of violence as a result of social stigma and marginalisation.

While his murder is being investigated, no arrests have yet been made. His story continues to inspire calls for justice and greater protection for LGBTQ+ individuals in South Africa.

Don’t let Xolani's brutal murder be forgotten or go unsolved. His loved ones—like so many other families in South Africa—hold on to the hope that those responsible will be held accountable for their actions.
